World Water Day

According to the United Nations, water shortages, dirty water and climate change are endangering the lives of millions of people. Especially children and weakened people are threatened by diseases caused by polluted water and lack of hygiene. ASB is committed to providing clean drinking water and building sanitation facilities around the world.

For example, ASB is constructing wells in Niger, West Africa, that pump clean drinking water from depths of 500 to 750 meters. This enables the people and their livestock to drink fresh water. One of these deep wells also supplies thousands of refugees from neighbouring Mali.

At the end of February to mid-March, Tropical Storm Freddy hit the southern African country of Mozambique, destroying buildings and infrastructure. To ensure access to clean drinking water, ASB and its local partner Watsan Mozambique are providing mobile drinking water treatment units to provide clean water to the affected communities.

To enable people with disabilities to access sanitary facilities, ASB in Indonesia supports the barrier-free conversion of such facilities. With the involvement of disabled people's associations and the local population, the buildings are being designed earthquake-resistant.

Moreover, ASB supported people in need with clean drinking water after the severe earthquakes in Turkey and Syria by sending its rapid response team (FAST). Two water filtration plants were used to produce and distribute 20,000 liters of clean drinking water per day in the city of Samandağ in southeastern Turkey. In addition, 13 mobile Skyhydrant drinking water plants were delivered to partner organizations in Syria to produce drinking water there.
