Leaving behind a home, a business, and a familiar life is never easy. Yet when the war in Ukraine forced Alisa and her family to flee, they had no choice but to start over. Seeking safety for their children, they arrived in Zugdidi, Georgia, determined to build a new future.

Before the war, Alisa and her family owned vegetable and citrus shops as well as a beauty salon. In Georgia, however, they had to rebuild their lives from scratch.

While searching online for new opportunities, Alisa discovered ASB's Vocational Education and Training (VET) Programme. She registered and was soon selected to join the course.

Although she already had experience as a barber specializing in men's haircuts, Alisa wanted to expand her skills by learning women's hairstyling. Throughout the training, she gained new techniques, received professional tools to support her work, and found a welcoming learning environment.

Beyond developing new professional skills, the programme also helped Alisa integrate into her new community. She built friendships, gained confidence, and began to feel at home again.

" From the very first day, I felt welcomed and supported. The VET Programme gave me much more than new professional skills. It helped me believe in myself again, meet new people, and feel like I belong in my new community," she says.

Her commitment and dedication paid off. After completing the course, the owner of the salon where she completed her practical training offered her a job. Today, Alisa works there as a hairstylist, turning her newly acquired skills into a stable source of income and a fresh start.

"When I was offered a job after completing the course, I felt that I was finally starting a new chapter of my life. It gave me hope and the opportunity to move forward," she says.

Looking back, Alisa encourages other women not to hesitate if they have the opportunity to participate in the programme.

"I encourage every woman who is thinking about joining the ASB VET Programme to take that first step. Learning new skills can open new doors, give you confidence, and truly change your life."
