Strengthening Emergency Medical Teams: Insights from the WHO Regional Meeting in Madrid

From January 27 to 29, 2026, ASB Georgia and Armenia participated in the WHO European Emergency Medical Teams (EMT) Regional Meeting held in Madrid. Hosted by Spain, the event was organized in collaboration with the WHO Regional Office for Europe and the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), with support from the Government of Spain.

The meeting convened national EMT focal points, ministries, and partner organizations to assess the progress of the EMT Regional Action Plan 2024–2030. Participants engaged in meaningful exchanges on various critical topics, including governance, training systems, digital coordination, and cross-border cooperation strategies. Discussions were aligned with the EMT 2030 Global Strategy, emphasizing the need to enhance national emergency health capabilities and to integrate EMT standards into public health systems through more effective international coordination.

For ASB, participation in this meeting was particularly vital as our EMT support program in Armenia and Georgia approaches its final phase. Leaders from the Georgian and Armenian EMT teams shared insightful experiences and lessons learned, showcasing the importance of parallel system development and regional cooperation.

The Madrid event served as a crucial platform to validate best practices, strengthen partnerships, and ensure continued engagement in the regional emergency health preparedness network. By collaborating with diverse stakeholders, ASB reaffirms its commitment to improving emergency response capabilities across Europe, ultimately enhancing the resilience of health systems when faced with crises.
