GENERAL INFORMATION – “NOTHING ABOUT US WITHOUT US”
According to World Health Organization on average approximately 15% of the population are persons with disability, while in Georgia there are only 3% of them registered in Social Service Agency. The report of Public Defender of Georgia states that persons with disability living in the rural area of Georgia face the drastic problem of being socially and politically “invisible”. Despite multiple governmental and nongovernmental efforts, participation of persons with disability in decision making process bears formal character. As for existing services, they require improvement on both standards and coverage levels.
Experience accumulated through several years of implementation of socio-economic and integration activities aiming to advocate the rights of persons with disability and other disadvantaged persons enables ASB Georgia and its partners- EDEC and AEE to use their expertise for implementing the newly funded project “Equal Opportunities for Persons with Disability – Supporting Social Service Providers in Rural Georgia”.
NEW AND INNOVATIVE APPROACH - “DISABLED TO DISABLED”
The innovative consultancy service “disabled to disabled” will be introduced and established in three municipalities of Georgia. The main idea behind this approach is to train persons with disability, so that they acquire the competence and confidence to provide essential information and services to other disabled persons and their families who face similar barriers and challenges.
OTHER ACTIVITIES AND APPROACHES
Persons with disability are frequently disadvantaged on the labor market. Promotion of social service delivery, being one of the main pillars of ASB Georgia, will be used as a tool for ensuring the long-term and sustainable employment of persons with disability and their family members. As a result, 8 social service delivery Social Enterprises will be stablished in the rural areas of Georgia.
Targeted PR campaign and debates will serve the planned PUBLIC AWARENESS RAISING process.
RESEARCH on existing gaps hindering the effective and sufficient operation of consultancy councils will be conducted and tailored trainings provided to strengthen their capacity.
Particular attention will be given to women who take care of their disabled family members by EMPOWERING them through involvement into decision making process on local level.
The holistic approach of ASB, EDEC and AEE will contribute to the provision of targeted and demand based social services to the persons with disability in the remote areas of Georgia.
