Education and Friendship: Key Steps to Integration for Ukrainian Children

“My children are taking part in ASB’s free online learning course — it really helps them, and they enjoy it a lot. Thanks to ASB, they also have opportunities to spend time with friends. During ASB’s children’s events, they meet Georgian peers, which greatly supports their integration, and that’s very important to us.” -said Oksana, a mother of two from Kherson, Ukraine, has been living in the suburbs of Tbilisi with her children, eight-year-old Yana and twelve-year-old Yaroslav, since 2022. Having fled the war more than three years ago.

Yana and Yaroslav study in the Ukrainian sector of a Tbilisi school, Yana is in the third grade, and Yaroslav in the seventh. They both enjoy school and have made good friends there. For the past five months, the children have also been attending ASB’s free online English course.

“I have many friends,” says Yaroslav with a smile. “There are six boys and five girls in my class. ASB’s English lessons are fun, the teacher tells us interesting facts and helps us learn the language in a creative way. The atmosphere is very friendly, and I enjoy studying with my friends.”

Yana, his younger sister, shares the same enthusiasm for learning:
“I’ve learned so many new English words that I didn’t know before. Our teacher is very kind she never gets angry and always explains everything patiently.”

Both children actively participate in ASB’s children’s events, such as the Summer Fun Days held in Mziuri and Kikvidze Parks. These activities have become a joyful part of their lives, offering them a chance to play, socialize, and connect with others.

Yaroslav also talks about his friendships with Georgian classmates:
“I have Georgian friends too. We play football together. I study in the Ukrainian sector, and my friend is in the Georgian one. I’m learning Georgian, and he knows Russian, so that’s how we communicate.”

For the past year, ASB’s free online tutoring program has been helping more than 700 learners grow and succeed!
